Readers offer their views of Jimmy Buffett's concert in Irvine

For many, the pre-concert party in the parking lot is a highlight, though some complain about the venue.

We asked readers who attended Saturday's Jimmy Buffett concert in Irvine to share their impressions of the show. Here are some of the responses:

The Jimmy Buffett concert this past Saturday night was the best concert I have ever been to. He put on an incredible show, over two hours of his best music! The set was really nice, the interaction with the crowd was great. It was one huge party in the parking lot before the concert. This was our first Jimmy Buffett concert and what a great experience it was. We now know for future concerts, rent an RV and party in the parking lot with all the Parrotheads! It was one huge family atmosphere, it was like everyone had the Aloha spirit!

The only complaint I have is the way the Irvine amphitheater handled the crowded situation. There is only one way in and out, and it took nearly 20 minutes just to make it to our seats, as the crowd was so large and people were literally stopped going up the ramp to the Terrace and Grass seating. It reminded us of the 405 at 5 p.m. We would take a couple steps and then have to stop and wait for the crowd to move, then take a few more steps. It was awful! When the concert ended, we waited about 20 minutes for the crowd to leave, we were one of the last to leave the amphitheater, but once we got outside of there, the crowd was just as terrible trying to leave. It took us another 20 minutes just to get to our car and then 40 minutes to get out of the parking lot. The amount of trash left in the parking lot by the partiers was sad. The Aloha spirit was definitely gone by then. I feel for the employees who had to clean up after that!

Buffett gives resort crowd exactly what it came to see
By STEVEN V. CRONIN Staff Writer
Published: Sunday, July 1, 2007

ATLANTIC CITY — Atlantic City's beach and Boardwalk were crowded Saturday night, but Jimmy Buffett took the party inside as he played to a sold-out crowd at Boardwalk Hall.

The crowd of Buffett fans — whom he affectionally calls Parrotheads — sang along with the singer as he ran through a mix of old standards, new favorites and a variety of cover songs from the likes of Willie Nelson and Van Morrison.

Dressed in yellow beach shorts, a blue T-shirt and sporting bare feet, Buffett led the crowd in a concert that was part sing-along, part ritual and all entertainment.

“All right, Fourth of July weekend is off to a good start in Atlantic City,” Buffett told the cheering crowd early in the show. And it certainly was.

Fans, many of whom had spent the hours before the show partying on the city's Boardwalk and at its beach bars, were in high spirits when Buffett took the stage 15 minutes past the advertised 8 p.m. start time.

The fans turned the drab gray of Boardwalk Hall's concrete floors into a tropical garden, with most showing up in brightly colored Hawaiian shirts. Others sported leis or wore hula skirts in a variety of colors. There were people in parrot hats, some in full parrot costume.

Others, some the same age as the 60-year-old singer, wore balloon hats fashioned into shark fins (inspired by Buffett's song “Fins”) while others wore pirate hats and sported eye patches. Buffett, a Caribbean-inspired Peter Pan, has been fascinated by pirates since long before Capt. Jack Sparrow ever hit the scene.
