Some, like the Mendicant and Soul Caller, have a standard pool of mana points to cast spells.Others, like the Warlord and Stormseeker, have rage or astral energy pools that begin at zero, but fill based on actions performed in battle.Still others, like the Ronin or Archeologist classes, have a focus pool that starts each battle at a max of fifty, but can regenerate every round once a skill has been used.

This adds a layer of interesting strategy and complexity to the battle system.In addition to regular attacks and skills, there are whole party attacks called kessens, as well as buffs and summons, that use an empower gauge that slowly fills on the side of the battle screen.Unfortunately, while kessens and summons seem like a good idea for a while, regular character abilities seem to surpass their effectiveness from about the mid-game on.

At this point, it becomes more worthwhile to use the gauge in order to power up individual attacks or spells.Powering up spells is not just something that can be done via the empower gauge; most spells can have their area of effect changed with the press of a button.For an increased MP cost, a single-target fire spell can easily be changed to one that hits a whole row or all enemies.

Sometimes this can be beneficial to make sure you reach newer areas or bosses with full health.Overall, the game works.Nothing is technically wrong with it.I just don’t have strong feelings either way about it.That is until we talk now about the achievements.Besides most of them being for doing things in the story, there are a lot of grindy achievements.

First, we need to play the game twice once with a male and once with a female protagonist.This is because a couple of achievements are based solely on a character that appears for one gender’s character.

There are numerous achievements also based on making particular choices in the journey as well.Luckily, these can be earned simply by creating multiple save files and taking alternate choices to get the desired outcome.

But this leaves us with the crafting.In addition, landing hits, and being hit, in turn fills the Kessen bar, different levels of which allow you to use powerful Kessen attacks, such as all characters attacking with their ranged weapons, or the front row using their melee weapons to hit a random enemy, in addition to their regular attack.For example, the summon attack I have uses four bars of the Kessen meter, and so is best saved for the stronger creature or boss encounters.

There are people to teach new skills and Kessens, and you can swap the party around if you feel the need maybe more healers will help you get through that tough section of dungeon? With an involving main quest to follow in addition to bounty boards and side missions, there is no shortage of things to keep you busy.All in all, Stormseeker Games have done a good job with Infinite Adventures, and if you are in the mood for a pure old school hit of difficulty then you could do a lot worse.

Loot is quite sparse, usually being guarded by yokai, powerful enemies that are visible on the map.One set of floors started to become incredibly boring after running into an unnecessary amount of dead ends, and most of the labyrinth could have done with more interesting floor layouts.

A few more puzzle types would have been a good idea too, as the block puzzles never become particularly difficult.Between some interesting classes and the empower mechanic, battles are usually quick and generally pretty fun.Each class uses one of four resource types, from generic mana to rage which fills when dealing and receiving damage.

This helps to make classes feel unique compared to other DRPGs and allows for some more creative party setups.Having some sort of extra resource to manage during battles is something that many DRPGs seem to do nowadays, and it definitely helps add an extra layer of strategy to each encounter.While battles may be the strongest part of the game, there are still a few issues when it comes to the way certain classes are designed.

Many skill trees end up being near useless compared to others no matter what party composition you are using, and some classes end up being easily outclassed by others.

The aforementioned Kessens also feel rather weak later on in the game when you have access to better skills that benefit from being empowered.This brings us to the one area in Infinite Adventures that really has little going for it: The story.For most dungeon crawler fans a lengthy story is less of a priority compared to interesting dungeons and combat, but games like Labyrinth of Refrain show that you can have all of that without sacrificing anything.

But, as with most of the way information is given to you during the game, its hard to care about any of the world with how quickly everything is introduced.Characterisation suffers a lot from this need to give too much detail on unimportant things.Their actually personalities and motivations end up being rather simplistic, and by the end of the story there were only a couple of characters that were actually interesting.

Instead of trying to create a large world with a detailed backstory, they should have toned it down and instead focused on creating characters that the player will actually care about.Again, wildly varying art styles are nothing new when it comes to DRPGs, but here it just makes the mediocre art look even worse.For the purposes of this review we declined from turning off voices — a welcome feature — but many scenes would have had a little more impact without the amateurish voice acting.

While they are well-designed, the coloring seems a little too bright and the shading and small details not quite enough there to match the style of the backgrounds.Overall the graphics are a strong point, but matching foreground with background styles a little more and animating the sprites could boost great graphics to amazing ones.

Infinite Adventures seems to capture the spirit of an Etrian Odyssey story and gameplay in an experience about half the length and with more quality-of-life enhancements than any entry in the long-running series.Stormseeker Games has put forth a strong debut title and will be worth keeping an eye on from this point forward.April 14, October 14,
